Manguri Siding

The remote rail siding 42km west of town where The Ghan stops — your chance to glimpse the legendary outback train on its run between Adelaide and Darwin.

Highlights

  • Where The Ghan stops so passengers can transfer in for a Coober Pedy day excursion
  • A lonely siding on the Adelaide–Darwin line — pure outback railway romance
  • Time it right and you may catch the train crossing the gibber plains

About 42km west of town, Manguri Siding is a lonely stop on the Adelaide–Darwin railway — and the point where the famous tourist train The Ghan pauses so passengers can disembark for a day excursion into Coober Pedy. There’s nothing out here but the line, the gibber plain and a very big sky, which is exactly the appeal.

If you can line your visit up with the train’s schedule, it’s a rare chance to watch The Ghan roll through the middle of nowhere — a classic outback photo. It’s an unsealed drive with no facilities, so go prepared: carry water and fuel, and check the road and train times before you head out (the timetable is seasonal). See outback safety first.
