Highlights
- A genuine miners’ club since 1964, run by volunteers — and open to visitors
- Hearty Italian food and a beer garden with sunset views over town
- Walls of historical photos from the opal field’s Italian community
One of the friendliest tables in town, the Coober Pedy Italian Club (the Italo-Miners' Club) has been going since 1964 and is still run by volunteers. It’s a window into the big Italian community that helped build the opal fields — and, like most of Coober Pedy’s nationality clubs, visitors are genuinely welcome.
Come for hearty, no-fuss Italian cooking, a drink in the beer garden as the sun drops over the diggings, and walls lined with old photographs of the field’s Italian families. Hours are seasonal and volunteer-dependent (generally Thursday to Saturday from 5pm, meals 6–8pm), so it’s worth calling ahead on (08) 8672 5101 before you head down.
It’s one stop on a tour of Coober Pedy’s multicultural community — see also the Croatian Club and the Greek community’s Friday BBQ.
