Where to Stay: Underground vs Above Ground
Dugout or daylight? How to choose your Coober Pedy bed — the cool, quiet novelty of underground rooms vs the practicality of above-ground stays.
Coober Pedy’s signature experience is sleeping underground, but it’s not the only option. Here’s how to choose.
The case for underground
Dugout rooms are carved into the sandstone and stay a constant ~23°C year-round — blissful in summer, cosy in winter — and they’re dark and silent, so you sleep beautifully. It’s also just a brilliant novelty. The trade-off: no windows / natural light, and ventilation varies room to room.
- Iconic pick: the Desert Cave Hotel (upmarket).
- Mid-range/quirky: the Underground Motel, Lookout Cave and Radeka Downunder.
- Budget/novel: pitch a tent underground at Riba’s.

The case for above ground
Above-ground stays suit you if you want natural light, are travelling with a van or caravan (powered sites), have a dog (most dugouts aren’t pet-friendly), or just prefer a conventional room.
- Holiday parks: BIG4 Stuart Range (pet-friendly, pool, dog wash) and the Mud Hut Motel.

Quick guide
- Want the full Coober Pedy experience / hate the heat? Go underground.
- Travelling with a dog or a caravan, or want a window? Go above ground (see travelling with pets).
- On a budget? Either works — see Coober Pedy on a budget.
Whatever you choose, book ahead in peak season (Apr–Sep and around events) — beds are limited in a town this size.
