When to Visit & How Long to Stay

Best time to visit

April to October is the sweet spot — mild, sunny days perfect for being outside and exploring the Breakaways at sunrise or sunset.

November to March is very hot, regularly 35–45 °C+. It’s still visitable (and the underground attractions and dugout stays stay naturally cool), but plan indoor/underground activities, avoid the midday sun, and carry plenty of water. Some tours run a reduced schedule over the hottest months.

Whatever the season, nights can be cold in winter — pack layers.

How long to stay

• Half a day / overnight stop — enough to see the town highlights: an underground mine or museum, an underground church, the Big Winch lookout, and a noodle for opal.
• 2 days — adds a sunset at the Kanku-Breakaways, a proper mine tour, and a relaxed underground night’s sleep.
• 3+ days — time for a big day trip like the Painted Desert or the Oodnadatta Track mail run.

Most travellers are pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do — give it more time than you think.
