When to Visit & How Long to Stay
The best time of year to visit Coober Pedy, and how many days you really need.
Best time to visit
April to October is the sweet spot — mild, sunny days perfect for being outside and exploring the Breakaways at sunrise or sunset.
November to March is very hot, regularly 35–45 °C+. It’s still visitable (and the underground attractions and dugout stays stay naturally cool), but plan indoor/underground activities, avoid the midday sun, and carry plenty of water. Some tours run a reduced schedule over the hottest months.
Whatever the season, nights can be cold in winter — pack layers.
How long to stay
- Half a day / overnight stop — enough to see the town highlights: an underground mine or museum, an underground church, the Big Winch lookout, and a noodle for opal.
- 2 days — adds a sunset at the Kanku-Breakaways, a proper mine tour, and a relaxed underground night’s sleep.
- 3+ days — time for a big day trip like the Painted Desert or the Oodnadatta Track mail run.
Most travellers are pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do — give it more time than you think.
