Getting to Coober Pedy & Getting Around

How to reach Coober Pedy by road, air or coach — and how to get around once you're here.

Coober Pedy sits on the Stuart Highway in outback South Australia — roughly 850 km north of Adelaide (about 8–9 hours’ drive) and 690 km south of Alice Springs. It’s a classic stop on the Adelaide–Uluru run.

By road

The Stuart Highway is fully sealed and well-maintained, but distances between towns and fuel are long — fill up whenever you can and carry extra water. The turn-off into town is clearly signed; the main street is Hutchison Street.

If you’re heading out to the Breakaways, Moon Plain, the Dog Fence or the Painted Desert, some roads are unsealed and can close after rain — check conditions locally and consider a higher-clearance or 4WD vehicle.

By air

Coober Pedy has a small airport just out of town with regular regional flights (check current schedules and operators). Wrightsair also runs scenic flights from here over the opal fields and Lake Eyre.

By coach

Long-distance coaches on the Adelaide–Alice Springs route stop at Coober Pedy. It’s a long haul, so book a comfortable seat.

Getting around town

The town centre is compact and walkable, but a car helps for the dugout attractions on the edges of town and any day trips. No car? You can hire a car, e-bike or motorbike locally at 2 Minute Noodlers.
