Coober Pedy Packing List

Pack for outdoor stops, underground tours and a long drive. Start with things you already own, then fill the gaps that matter for your trip.

For a typical Coober Pedy visit, start with water, a sun hat, closed shoes, sun protection, comfortable layers and a fly net. Add the equipment your route and activities require. You do not need to buy a specialist fossicking kit just to try hand noodling or join a mine tour.

Use what you already own where it does the job. This list separates everyday visitor gear from optional extras, so a short town stay does not turn into an unnecessary shopping exercise.

Charging and ordinary lighting

A white-light headlamp keeps your hands free at a campsite or when sorting luggage after dark. The Petzl TIKKINA is one option, checked in Black, One Size. Petzl specifies a maximum 300-lumen output and three included AAA/LR03 batteries. The compatible CORE rechargeable battery is a separate accessory; do not assume the linked offer includes it. Compare the lighting modes and battery setup with what you already own.

A power bank can keep your phone available between charging stops. The Anker Zolo in Black, model A1688 is the option checked here. Anker’s Australian specification lists 10,000mAh capacity, a maximum 30W output and a built-in USB-C cable. Check your phone’s connector and charging requirements; a maximum output figure is not a promise of a particular charging speed. If flying, check your airline’s current battery rules. A charged phone still needs coverage; a power bank does not solve remote communication gaps.

Named product links identify the model or variant to inspect, while links marked “search results” open broader comparisons. Check the selected product, charging specification, seller and delivery date before buying. We have not conducted hands-on tests of these products.

If you want to try noodling

For public hand noodling, bring water, a hat, closed shoes and a small container for finds. You can start in daylight without a UV torch. The official noodling guidance distinguishes hand searching from using digging devices; do not treat a pick or shovel as standard public-noodling equipment.

A UV blacklight is an optional inspection tool. Read the blacklight buying guide before choosing one, including the eyewear and charging considerations. Ask your mine-tour operator what it supplies before buying a duplicate.

For night noodling, use the designated Jeweller’s Shop Road public area in town and bring both your blacklight and a normal white-light torch. Do not wander onto the surrounding opal fields at night. Follow the official field warnings and our outback safety guide.

If you are driving the Stuart Highway

Town sightseeing and a remote-track journey need different preparation. Before departure, check the vehicle, spare tyre, fuel plan, water supplies and current road conditions. Download route information and tell someone your plans. Use the Stuart Highway guide and getting here to plan the journey.

If hiring a car or campervan, read the rental agreement for sealed-road, unsealed-road and geographic restrictions before booking. Do not assume a higher vehicle category grants permission to use every outback road. For remote travel, arrange appropriate communication and emergency equipment for the route; a consumer shopping list is not a complete remote-travel plan.

With children

Pack familiar snacks, refillable water bottles, spare clothes and activities that work offline. Fit hats and nets before travelling and keep any UV torch under adult control. The family guide includes a free printable paper-blower activity and ideas for breaking up the drive.

Adjust for your season and stay

Check the forecast before packing. The when-to-visit guide explains the hotter months and cooler nights. Ask your accommodation what is supplied, particularly if camping or travelling with children, rather than buying items it already provides.

Next, compare underground and above-ground stays or choose a ready-made itinerary.
