One Perfect Day in Coober Pedy
The ideal one-day Coober Pedy itinerary — mines, museums, opal and a Breakaways sunset.
Got a single day? Here’s how to make the most of it.
Morning
- Start at Umoona Opal Mine & Museum (opens 8:30am) — the free museum and walk-through mine are the perfect orientation. Take the 10am tour.
- Wander Hutchison Street and browse the opal shops.
Lunch
- Grab a famous Coat of Arms pizza at John’s Pizza Bar, or an all-day feed at the Outback Bar & Grill.
Afternoon
- Go underground at an underground church and a show home like Faye’s Underground Home.
- Try your luck noodling for opal at the public noodling area — great for kids, and you keep what you find.
Sunset & evening
- Drive out to the Kanku-Breakaways for sunset (grab a park pass from the Visitor Centre first) — the colours are unforgettable.
- Back in town, dinner and a drink, then look up: the outback night sky is spectacular.
Staying over? Sleep underground — it’s the quintessential Coober Pedy experience. Tomorrow, tackle a working mine tour or a bigger day trip.
