A Weekend in Coober Pedy

A relaxed two-day Coober Pedy itinerary with mines, the Breakaways, a tour and a dugout stay.

Two days lets you see the highlights without rushing and add a proper tour or day trip.

Day 1 — The town

Morning: Umoona Opal Mine & Museum and the Old Timers Mine.
Lunch: John’s Pizza Bar.
Afternoon: the underground churches, Josephine’s Kangaroo Orphanage (feeding at 5:30pm), and a noodle for opal.
Sunset: the Big Winch lookout or the Breakaways.
Night: sleep underground at a dugout motel.

Day 2 — Go deeper

Morning: a guided working mine tour — or get hands-on with Unearthing Opal Experience.
Afternoon: drive the Breakaways loop past Moon Plain and the Dog Fence.
Evening: if it’s on, catch a film at the drive-in or dinner out — see things to do at night.
