Coober Pedy FAQ
Common questions about visiting Coober Pedy, answered.
Still got a question? Ask Miner Rob or get in touch.
Is Coober Pedy worth visiting?
Absolutely. It’s one of the most unusual towns on earth — most of it is underground to escape the heat, it’s the opal capital of the world, and the surrounding moonscape is genuinely otherworldly. Most visitors are surprised how much there is to do.
How many days do you need in Coober Pedy?
A full day covers the town highlights, but 2 days is ideal — it adds a Breakaways sunset and a proper mine tour. With 3+ days you can do a big day trip like the Painted Desert. See our itineraries.
When is the best time to visit?
April to October, when days are mild. November to March is very hot (35–45 °C+), though the underground attractions stay cool year-round. More in when to visit.
Is Coober Pedy safe?
Yes, with common sense. The main hazard is the thousands of unfenced mine shafts — never walk backwards near diggings, keep kids close, and only fossick in marked public noodling areas. Carry water, and fuel up before remote drives. See outback safety.
Can you really sleep underground?
Yes! Several hotels, motels and B&Bs are dug into the rock — naturally cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s a genuine bucket-list experience. Browse places to stay.
Can you find your own opal?
Yes — it’s called noodling, and it’s free in the public noodling areas. Anything you find is yours to keep. Working mine tours also include a noodling pit. Great fun for kids.
How far is Coober Pedy from Adelaide and Uluru?
About 850 km (8–9 hours) north of Adelaide on the sealed Stuart Highway, and roughly 690 km south of Alice Springs — a natural stopover on the way to Uluru. See getting here.
Do you need a 4WD?
Not for the town or the Stuart Highway, which are sealed. Some day-trip roads (Breakaways, Painted Desert, Oodnadatta Track) are unsealed and better suited to higher-clearance or 4WD vehicles, and can close after rain — check conditions locally.
Is Coober Pedy expensive?
It can be done on any budget. Many of the best experiences — noodling, the underground churches, the Big Winch lookout, the Breakaways — are free. See free things to do.
